Presidential Blues: A Political Appointee's Plus-One
This past Monday, on a balmy DC evening, I was the lucky recipient of a plus-one invite at the Political Appointee Summer Appreciation Picnic on the White House South Lawn. With hundreds of federal employees and their guests (a raucous bunch, no doubt), I snacked on ice cream, popcorn, and cotton candy, shotgunned soft drinks so that I could get a full set of souvenir plastic "White House" cups (they were a souvenirs for me, at least), and strained on not-tall-enough-tippy-toes, going fan-girl crazy, while attempting to get a better view of President Obama shaking hands through the receiving line. I am here to report: he is even more handsome in real life.
Inspired by Michelle, my look could also be called Barack Bait:
Into my trusty ModCloth black skirt, I tucked a recent Secondi find, a textured sleeveless Sandro top (with a gorgeous open back), and defined the waist with a vintage Louis Vuitton belt given to me by a client. I wore nude pleather bow-ed espadrilles by Aerosole, citrine and gold earrings on loan from my mother, a turquoise and lapis gum ball ring, and a clutch tied up in a scarf bow. (This is the first time that I ever wrapped a clutch up in a scarf and sketched it on this blog. Coincidentally, I'm also wearing the same high waisted, full A-line style skirt, and the same turquoise and lapis ring. Some concepts just go together like cheese on toast.)
And yes, that is a White House cocktail napkin that I stuffed into my purse. Souvenirs, people!
